This brilliant rug is a vintage handmade Persian Bessarabian Kilim in excellent condition. Kilim rugs are flat weave with a thin pile that is almost reversible since the exact same pattern is on the front and back. Bessarabian refers to rugs originally made in Moldova, Russia or Ukraine. Their distinctive style often influences' kilim rugs made in Iran, such as this one. This kilim is rather dense and sturdy, almost like a canvas which is a unique thickness for kilim rugs. The tribal and geometric design consists of a series of three large bright and bold diamond-like medallions in a beautiful shade of muted turquoise blue with white, mauve, bone pale pink accents, each one framed in dramatic black and white. These are known as footed medallions with their black "feet" extending into the soft red open field. The open field is dotted with charming flowers leading to half-medallions that line the inside of the border, all hand-knotted in the same muted and elegant hues made from only vegetable and other natural dyes. The dramatic black border really pops with small medallion repeats in alternating colors to match the rug's beautiful colorway. Despite the rug's flat weave and thin pile, it is extremely well-made and can handle high traffic areas. It will continue to last for generations. Size: 6'1"x8'8"
